  • Who are we ?
    • Graftys is a French company that was found in 2005 by four co-founders from the orthopedic industry and from biomaterial research. Graftys scientific knowledge originates from a tight collaboration with several high profile academic institutions. Our research and development is guided by a global network of well known scientists and surgeons, focusing on unmet clinical needs designed to improve surgical outcomes.
  • What is a bone graft substitute ?
    • Bone graft substitutes are used in orthopedic, trauma, and dentistry to fill bone defects. The aim of a bone graft is to optimize reconstruction of healthy bone and help you to recover full mobility and function.
  • What are the bone graft options before a surgery ?
    • There is different type of bone graft:

      - Autograft: the surgeon removes bone from another part of your skeleton (often from the iliac crest) and implants it into the defect. The disadvantage of this common procedure is that the surgeon needs to create an additional incision in order to obtain the graft.  This results in two surgery sites, two scars, additional infection risk, and sometimes more pain.

      - Allograft & Xenograft: The bone graft comes respectively from a human donor or an animal donor. These kinds of bone graft are regularly used but they pose some risk of infection, immunologic reaction, or viral transmission.

      - Synthetic: Among the different kinds of synthetics, Graftys, guided by its collaboration with well known academic laboratories, decided to work with calcium phosphate, which mimics the natural bone mineral composition. According to the last scientifically data,   Graftys synthetic calcium phosphate seems to represent the best option for bone reconstruction because it is safe and efficient; synthetic products pose no risk of viral transmission and require no second surgery site.

  • What are Graftys job and goals ?
    • Graftys is doing research on synthetic bone graft substitutes to offer an efficient and biocompatible alternative to bone graft substitute coming from human or animal sources.
  • What are the advantages of a synthetic bone graft ?
    •

Graftys synthetic bone grafts are safe; synthetic products carry no risk of viral transmission or immunologic reaction and it does not require an additional surgical site on another part of your body to remove autologous bone.

  • Do Graftys products contain animal origin traces ?
    • No, Graftys products are 100% synthetic.
  • Is there any possibility of immunologic reaction to synthetic graft?
    • Immunologic reactions can happen only when your antibody recognize a protein that is “foreign”. Graftys synthetic bone graft does not contain any protein. Our products are composed of calcium phosphate which is the composition of the mineral phase of the natural bone (biocompatible).
  • Why would I ever need bone graft?
    • Your surgeon will decide if bone graft is required for your procedure. Bone grafts are used principally for reconstitution of bone stock:

      - In orthopedics, to fill a bone defect in order to insure long term support for a metal device. New bone gradually replaces the bone graft.

      - In trauma, to fill a bone defect created to an injury,

      - In dentistry, to fill a bone void and reconstruct your maxillofacial bone to implant a new tooth or simply to stabilize your natural teeth,

Example of injectable bone substitute used in orthopedics surgery:

  • Can the product be used for spine surgery?

    • Spine fusion surgeries are intended to relieve pain due to intervertebral disc degeneration or trauma. The surgeon removes your intervertebral disc and inserts instead a hollow interbody cage that will restore sufficient intervertebral space. In order to maintain this interbody space, surgeons wish to optimize bone growth around and through the cage which is implanted between the two vertebrae in order to enhance stability of the construct. Empty space between the two vertebrae can lead to growth of poor quality bone which does not have significant mechanical strength.
  • What is Graftys doing about osteoporosis?
    • Graftys is working on osteoporosis since its creation. This disease affects a significant percentage of the population of industrialized nations. Osteoporosis affects 80% of women over the age of  55. Consequences can be dramatic and 24% of osteoporotic hip fracture patients died within one year after their fracture. (NOF, USA). The estimated cost of osteoporosis in 2006 for public health insurance was 53 billions dollars in Europe and 34 billions dollars in the USA. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation (USA), 25-50% of osteoporotic persons do not take their medications regularly because of undesirable effects of the drugs and because symptoms of this disease are often not apparent to the patient until the occurrence of a fracture.

We are developing a bone graft which is a combination of an anti-osteoporotic drug and a synthetic bone graft substitute to prevent the risk of osteoporotic fracture.

  • What other technologies is Graftys developing?
    • We are working on smart biomaterials; combinations of different drugs and bone graft substitutes with the aim of building new quality bone while delivering locally the appropriate drug. A local treatment is often more efficient than a systemic one and reduces the quantity of needed drugs and side effects associated to it.  Graftys is working on different kinds of bone graft substitute that will be used in the future:

      - Pain relief for traumatic bone defect.

      - Reduction of infection risks thanks to an association between a bone graft substitute and an antibiotic.

      - Osteoporotic fracture prevention and healing for osteoporotic persons thanks to an association between a bone graft substitute and an antiosteoporotic. The aim is to increase local bone density in osteoporotic patient.
