Calcium phosphate materials are biocompatible and capable of bonding chemically to bone and dental. They are widely used as bone repair materials in human surgery because their chemical composition is similar to that of bone.
Several compositions are used inducing different properties.

Among calcium phosphate biomaterials, there are:

Tricalcium phosphate ß (ß-TCP) easily bioresorbable .
Biphasic Calcium Phosphates
(BCP : Biphasic Calcium Phosphates) mixture of hydroxyapatite (HA) and ß-TCP.

An adapted porous structure is necessary to obtain a bone substitute capable to be degraded by bone cells and so to be replaced by new bone.

Thus these biomaterials have to contain :

a microporosity – diameter of pores inferior than 10 μm – which allows the diffusion of biological fluids and ionic exchanges – Ca2+ et PO43- .
a macroporosity – diameter of pores larger than 100 μm – which allows the colonisation of implant by bone cells.

Porous architecture of materials can be artificially split in several parameters as total porosity or interconnection between macropores of the material.

Detailed studies were performed on the synthetic bone substitute developed by Graftys in order to optimize porous architecture.
In order to optimize its bone architecture allowing to obtain an adequate porosity for a rapid bone substitution and a better permeability of the ceramic with fluids and bone cells without altering its mechanical properties

Thanks to an original process, developed ceramics have numerous macropores and interconnected canals between macroporous cavities, which allows that a rapid colonization of cells at the center of the biomaterial.
