BIOACTYS® GRANULES

Oral Surgery

About

BIOACTYS® GRANULES are a macroporous Biphasic Calcium Phosphate Biomaterial for bone void filling. It is an osteoconductive biomaterial that is fully integrated within the bone environment. BIOACTYS GRANULES have an advanced porous structure with clinically proven efficacy. BIOACTYS GRANULES facilitate cellular reconstruction which is adapted to the natural kinetics of bone remodeling. Through the use of granules of different diameters, BIOACTYS GRANULES remains the best choice for synthetic bone void filling in dental surgery such as periodontal bone defects and peri-implant bone filling.
BIOACTYS® GRANULES are replaced by new bone and provide stabilization of the operated site.

Composition

BIOACTYS® GRANULES are composed of a 60% Hydroxyapatite and 40% β-Tricalcium Phosphate mix:
• HA : Hydroxyapatite, Ca10 (PO4)6 (OH)2, Bone-bonding material, low dissolution rate
• β-TCP: Beta Tricalcium Phosphate, Ca3 (PO4)2, High dissolution rate

Physicochemical properties

Available Initial Porosity
Global Porosity: 70% distributed as below:
• Micro porosity (pores<10 µm): 45%;
• Meso porosity (10 - 100 µm): 20%;
• Macro porosity (>100 µm): 35%

Mechanism of action

BIOACTYS® GRANULES are a macroporous biomaterial with a composition similar to the crystalline phase of the bone. The porosity structure of BIOACTYS® GRANULES can be fully penetrated by biological fluids and cells. β-TCP is partially dissolved before precipitating as apatite crystals on the HA structure. These apatite crystals, similar to native bone crystals, promote cellular adhesion to start the natural resorption cycle. The low dissolution rate of HA offers a stable scaffold needed for cells to form bone (rapid dissolution can lead to fibrosis and seroma). Bone formation occurs throughout the material and occurs simultaneously with resorption of the implant.

Features

  Advantages Benefits
Biphasic 60% HA 40% Beta-TCP

Material resorbs at similar speed to that the new bone growth

Avoid gap formation, fibrosis, and seroma development instead of healthy mineralized bone

Porosity

Biological fluids and cellular colonization throughout the implant

Biological fluids and cells are present throughout the implant for full remodeling of the implant

Macro porosity

35% of pores >100µm. Suitable size to permit Osteoclastic and Osteoblastic invasion

Resorption can be achieved throughout the implant

Mechanical strength >10 MPa

Higher than that of cancellous bone

Stabilization of the operated site

Radio opacity

Visible on X-Rays and Scans

Ability to follow the process of resorption through radiography
